(TheRedWire.com) – New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the eight other “squad” members might have been pushing for defunding the police. Still, they have spent over $1.2 million on private security since they took office.
Ocasio-Cortez’s security has cost her $272,000, including specific security updates for her offices, while Rep. Cori Bush (D-Missouri) has spent over $730,000 on private security. Most importantly, $75,000 of those funds were paid to her now husband. However, even more curious is that Bush has always paid a lot for security, even before she got into the House of Representatives in 2021. During her first time running for Congress in 2019, Bush spent $736,748 for her security.
One of Bush’s most prominent donors was Peace Security, a St. Louis right-wing private security company that, despite promoting the Second Amendment, racked up $380,947. This goes against Bush’s stance as the Democratic lawmaker has often encouraged anti-gun campaign messaging.
In March, a Federal Election Commission complaint was filed against Bush after it was revealed that she had paid her now-husband large sums for security despite him lacking the proper license. Payments to him started two weeks before her unoccupied vehicle was shot in January 2022.
While Ocasio-Cortez has not spent as much as Bush since taking office in 2019, as part of the security costs, she has spent close to $2,000 to install security systems in her offices in the Bronx and Queens districts.
