(TheRedWire.com) –  North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum (R) claimed that former President Donald Trump had seemed to extend him an invite to serve in a possible second Trump administration during a call. Trump had reportedly told Burgum during the call that he would not be his running mate.

Burgum had been one of the people who had made it on Trump’s running mate shortlist prior to the recent announcement on Monday that Trump’s vice presidential pick is Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio). On Monday during an interview with CNN’s Kaitlan Collins, Burgum recounted how Trump had informed him that he would not be his running mate.

He added that the conversation with the former President had been “great” and that Trump had opened up with “Hey, Mr. Secretary.” He continued by noting that Trump had been positive and considerate to both him and his wife during the entire time.

Earlier this year Burgum had endorsed Trump after he had dropped his own presidential bid. Since then he has been a surrogate for the former President during appearances and interviews. He was also considered to be one of the possible options for the position of vice president along with Vance, Sens. Tim Scott (R-S.C), and Marco Rubio (R-Fla.).

On Monday Trump, who was formally nominated as the Republican candidate for 2024 also announced that Vance would be his running mate.

Collins during the interview pointed out that Burgum had previously stated he was not interested in a cabinet position, to which Burgum confirmed that he was focused on governing North Dakota. He also pointed out that unless Trump wins in the upcoming election there would not be any cabinet positions.
