(TheRedWire.com) – On Tuesday, former FBI Director James Comey claimed that former President Donald Trump was “begging” for his sentencing in the hush money case to include jail time, given how often he has criticized the court proceedings and the judge.
Comey noted that while normally he would believe that charges like Trump’s would not include a prison sentence, he stated that he was unsure of what would happen in Trump’s case. He added that this was a defendant who had taken a “flamethrower” to the judicial process and jury and that with his actions he was “begging for a jail term.”
Comey pointed out that this was something that a judge would need to seriously consider when deciding if he wants to send a message and whether it is necessary for time in prison to be included in the sentence in order to deter this person.
Last week former president Donald Trump was found guilty on all 34 counts of falsifying business records in New York. He is the first U.S. president in history to stand and be convicted in a criminal trial. The allegations against him pertain to a payment made on his behalf by his former lawyer Michael Cohen to adult film star Stormy Daniels, intended to silence her, before the 2016 presidential election.
Trump’s sentence is set for July 11, only four days before he is expected to become officially the presidential nominee for the Republican party during the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. Trump’s legal team has promised that they will be appealing the case. However, as of right now, there is no indication that the proceedings will not continue according to the schedule.
