(TheRedWire.com) – Rep. George Santos, R-N.Y., has over the past few months been dealing with a lot of criticism over the lies and fabrications that he told during his 2022 midterm election campaign. The Representative on Tuesday filed the necessary paperwork in order to campaign for reelection.

The statement of candidacy was filed with the Federal Election Commission, on the final deadline for Santos to declare his candidacy or “disavow” fundraising activities. The statement of candidacy is not binding, which means that while Santos is allowed to continue fundraising and making campaign expenses he is not mandated to seek reelection.

The freshman lawmaker, who represents parts of Long Island and Queens, is one of the New York Republicans that helped the GOP win control of the lower chamber in the 2022 midterm elections. However, shortly after the election a number of media reports had come out with claims that Santos had lied about his resume, including previously being employed by Goldman Sachs and Citigroup, his graduation from Baruch College, and the ownership of many properties.

Following the New York Times investigation into Santos’ background, there were many lawmakers calling for him to resign from his position. However, Santos has expressed that he intends on serving his full term. In the past few months, he has faced many different scandals, including claims that he stole thousands of dollars raised for a lifesaving surgery for a veteran’s service dog. He had reportedly also lied about his mother being at the World Trade Center during the 9/11 attacks.
