(TheRedWire.com) – On Wednesday, Democratic Rep. Colin Allred of Texas, a civil rights lawyer, and former NFL linebacker, launched a campaign for the Senate seat currently held by Republican Sen. Ted Cruz.

In his campaign announcement video for 2024, Allred started by showing footage from the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot claiming that Cruz during the time of the insurrection “cheered on the mob” and “hid in a supply closet.”

Allred proceeded to state that the people of Texas did not need to feel embarrassed about their Senator because they could just change him. The video announcement was not aggressively attacking the Republican Party though, instead Allred greatly focused on all of his collaborative work which has allowed them to find bipartisan solutions to help with veteran issues, improve trade with Mexico, and promote domestic computer chip manufacturing. He also spoke about increasing wages, and reducing drug prices while also touting himself for being the first Congress member to use paternity leave.

Texas has not elected a Democrat in a statewide office in close to three decades, what’s more, Cruz has widely adapted his strategy since the 2018 election where he almost lost to then-Rep. Beto O’Rourke. Now, he is perceived to be a lot more moderate than he had once been.

On the other hand, Nick Maddux, a spokesperson for Cruz’s campaign, claimed that Allred was a “far-left radical” who is going to focus on transgender issues and will try to block Texans from being allowed to carry guns. He added that Allred would also be soft on crime.
