(TheRedWire.com) – Democratic lawmakers are unsure whether or not President Biden should agree to attend a debate against former President Donald Trump as they are scared that the debate would only help elevate Trump’s position.

Thus far, Trump has opted to skip all of the GOP presidential primary debates, however, he has argued that he is eager to debate former President Biden. Before Christmas, he had told host Hugh Hewitt that he was looking forward to debating against Biden and had even suggested that there should be 10 debates.

However, Democratic lawmakers are not as excited about the two candidates possibly debating against one another. Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin (Ill.) has argued that Biden should “think twice” before agreeing to debate Trump.

He added that he had been physically present during a debate between Trump and Hillary Clinton and that he had seen Trump do and say “outrageous things.” He pointed out that any debate would just give Trump the platform to once again push forward his extremist ideas.

While Democrat lawmakers are publicly pushing that Biden’s campaign should be focusing on his accomplishments, in privacy they have admitted that the campaign is counting on Trump being charged on his more than 90 felony charges and potentially collapsing under all the legal weight of the cases against him.

Furthermore, they acknowledge that Biden’s age, 81, is the biggest liability in the next race. While in 2020 Biden might have won in the debates against Trump according to the Democrats, they still fear what the effects of Biden going on the debate stage at his current age could be.
