(TheRedWire.com) – Democrats were preparing to turn newly elected House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) into their next boogeyman in the upcoming elections.
On Wednesday, the House selected Johnson to become the next House Speaker. Shortly after the 2024 campaign, President Joe Biden sent out a fundraising email in which they referred to Johnson as “a Trump lackey.” At the same time, the House Democratic campaign has also referenced Johnson, arguing that he was like Rep. Jim Jordan but “in a sports coat.”
In Virginia, the state Democratic party argued that following the recent election of Johnson in the House, the state’s Legislature became even “more important.” These recent statements are connected to the fact that Johnson is a big supporter of former President Donald Trump. More importantly, the Democrats believe that Johnson’s previous stance on key issues including abortion, same-sex marriage, and the attempts to overturn the 2020 presidential elections were going to move against the Republican party and would bring independent and swing voters to their side.
Democratic strategist Antjuan Seawright stated that Johnson, whom he referred to as “MAGA Mike” provided them with the necessary tools to create a case.
Prior to the House Republicans considering the Louisiana Republican a viable option for the position, not many people across the United States were aware of who he was. Still, since becoming the House Speaker, many have pointed to Johnson’s record and how he had supported a lawsuit in Texas that contested the results of the 2020 presidential election.
