(TheRedWire.com) – Former Vice President Mike Pence has received a subpoena by the Department of Justice’s special counsel, Jack Smith, who is leading the investigations into former President Trump’s attempts to overturn the 2020 election, as well as his role in the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack.

Attorney General Merrick Garland first appointed special counsel Jack Smith to the case in November, following Trump’s announcement that he would be running for the White House again in 2024. Smith is also handling the investigations into the classified documents found in Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate during the FBI raid this past summer. However, the subpoena sent to Pence only related to the January 6th investigation.

The first report of the subpoena was released by ABC News.

In December, NBC News reported that Smith had sent subpoenas to many local officials in swing states who had received communications from Trump, his aides, and his campaign as part of Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election. This was a clear indication that Smith was looking into the scheme involving fake electors, and all those who signed documents pretending to be their states’ rightful electors while falsely stating Trump had won those states instead of Biden.

The House special committee investigating the Capitol attack had previously collected evidence about the fake electors who had submitted false certifications to the National Archives alleging that Trump was the winner. The certificates were to be substituted by Pence in the place of the actual electoral votes. Both Trump and the public were to pressure Pence to make the change and interfere with the election results.
