(TheRedWire.com) – On Saturday Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) said that she was “glad” to see that a special prosecutor had been appointed to take over the case relating to the classified documents that were found in now-President Biden’s possession from the time that he served as vice president in President Obama’s administration.
Omar told MSNBC’s Symone Sanders-Townsend that investigating this case is particularly important as there was a deviation from what would have been regular security protocols. This could have led to risks which is why a thorough investigation is important. Omar also added that she did not understand how the same Republicans who supported Trump mishandling classified documents and refusing to hand them over, are now so concerned regarding Biden’s case and want to have thorough investigations into the potential risks.
In Trump’s case, the documents had been recovered from his Mar-a-Lago estate last summer after an FBI raid. This was after Trump and his team refused to hand over the documents after the National Archives sent through an official request. The FBI found hundreds of classified documents.
In Biden’s case, the first batch of documents was found on Nov. 2 in Biden’s old office in Washington, D.C. Following the discovery of the documents the National Archives was immediately informed and the documents were swiftly retrieved. Two more batches of documents were found in Biden’s Wilmington, Del., home. After the files were discovered they were swiftly handed into the investigation.
This makes the two cases substantially different as in one case the former President refused to cooperate while in the other Biden handed the mishandled documents over immediately.
