(TheRedWire.com) – Democratic lawyers have spoken up in support of the Supreme Court order that halted a lower court ruling that would have blocked access to mifepristone, an abortion drug.
On Friday, the Supreme Court sided with the Biden administration in a brief order that blocked a Texas federal judge’s ruling that the Federal Drug and Food Administration (FDA) had rushed the approval of mifepristone which effectively made the drug unsafe and thus access to it should be restricted. With this temporary victory, the FDA will be allowed to continue providing drug approvals.
President Biden and Democrats have been celebrating the recent ruling noting all the effects that the Texas ruling could have on the FDA’s authority, as well as talking about how the ruling would have severely restricted access to important medical care for women. Many Democrats also pointed out that the drug in question, mifepristone, was approved following a four-year process in 2000 and has since then safely and effectively been prescribed to many women.
Many called the Supreme Court’s order the “right decision” but continued to push for the importance of codifying access to the abortion pill.
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) took to Twitter to note that the FDA’s expert judgment on the drugs should not be pushed aside by judges’ “rulings that have no basis in science or law.” She added that the Supreme Court’s ruling is the “right decision” for women across the nation, but that it is a temporary ruling and that they needed to keep fighting in order to ensure that access to important medication would continue being available.
