(TheRedWire.com) – Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida, a Republican, is engaging in a promotional campaign for an upcoming one-on-one debate with Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom of California as the verbal battle between the two continues to escalate across the nation.
During a Fox News interview with Sean Hannity in June, Newsom announced his intention to debate DeSantis, to which DeSantis eagerly agreed on a Wednesday, stating, “Let’s get it done. Just tell me when and where. We’ll do it.” He sees the debate as a potential launching pad for his campaign.
The DeSantis campaign distributed talking points to supporters that framed the issue as more than a simple California versus Florida argument. Instead, it was portrayed as a clash of ideologies about the nation’s future. They argue that the choice between the two states has been made as people have moved to Florida, and now the debate will focus on the contrasting visions of both leaders.
According to the campaign’s messaging, the debate represents a choice between California’s perceived decline and DeSantis’s goal to revive the American Dream and lead the country toward a brighter future.
To drum up excitement, the campaign released advertisements for the debate, including an arcade game-styled ad that asks voters to “choose their fighter.”
Governor Newsom has also expressed his thoughts on the debate, describing it in a letter to Hannity as a Red versus Blue discussion, concentrating on state-level representation. He even proposed three possible locations for the event: Nevada, Georgia, or North Carolina.
DeSantis has been critical of California’s policies, citing examples from a recent visit to San Francisco, where he witnessed the negative consequences of what he believes are liberal policies. This included disturbing sights related to drug use and law enforcement issues that he feels have led to a decline in the city’s vitality.
The tension between the two governors has been building for several months, with disagreements on various subjects, including Newsom’s pro-abortion ads in Florida and DeSantis’s public criticism of crime and drug use in California cities.
Although both governors have accepted the debate challenge, the exact date and location remain undecided.
