(TheRedWire.com) – On Tuesday, GOP presidential candidate Ron DeSantis slammed former President Trump over calling for a primary challenge to Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas), who recently backed DeSantis in the 2024 presidential race.
In his comments on X, formerly known as Twitter, DeSantis pointed out that while Roy was working to secure the U.S.-Mexico border, which is what Trump had promised to do, Trump was on social media calling for someone to issue a primary challenge against Roy. He further pointed out that the Texas primary deadline had already passed and that he was honored to have Roy’s support. DeSantis further argued that it was no longer time to talk; instead, it was time for them to take action and “stop the invasion.”
These latest remarks were in response to Trump’s post on his social media network Truth Social, where he had called for a “smart and energetic Republican” to join the primary race against Roy. Trump had also argued that the right person would easily be able to beat Roy and that if anyone was interested, they just needed to let him know.
These comments had come after Roy’s appearance on Monday in Iowa along with DeSantis. In March, Roy had preemptively endorsed the Florida governor before DeSantis had announced that he would be running in the race. Last month, Roy once again expressed his support for DeSantis, who has struggled to gain the necessary momentum in the primary race and continues to be behind Trump in all the polls.
