(TheRedWire.com) – The Bexar County Sheriff’s Department issued a statement recommending the initiation of criminal charges against Republican Governor DeSantis and the State of Florida for the transportation of 49 undocumented migrants to Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, via airplane last year. The Miami Herald reported this development on Monday, mentioning that the sheriff’s office suggested misdemeanor and felony charges for “unlawful restraint” after investigating Florida’s actions. The statement clarified that the District Attorney’s office is currently reviewing the case, and a further update will be given to the public once the investigation concludes.

The flights under scrutiny took place in September 2022, starting from San Antonio and destined for Martha’s Vineyard. These flights were part of Florida’s program, which covered the cost of transporting undocumented migrants as part of a relocation initiative. After their arrival on the island, the migrants stayed for 48 hours before being transferred to a military base for shelter. Subsequently, an investigation was launched into their arrival.

Critics have denounced DeSantis’ decision, asserting that the predominantly Venezuelan migrants were enticed with promises of employment opportunities upon reaching the island.

The announcement regarding potential charges comes in the wake of two additional flights organized by Florida, which arrived in California. Attorney General Rob Bonta released a statement expressing that they are evaluating potential charges against those responsible for arranging these flights. Governor Newsom of California has echoed this sentiment.
