(TheRedWire.com) – Florida Governor Ron DeSantis in a recent press conference in Columbia, S.C. reacted to the revelation that the Department of Justice’s investigation into the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol attack will be the focus of the investigation. DeSantis, who is competing against Trump in the Republican primary race, has argued that Trump needed to be more “forceful” but that he did not commit any crimes on that day.
As DeSantis argued during Tuesday’s press conference, it is clear that Trump was in the White House and that he did not take any action as the events were unfolding. He further argued that he had not had a chance to look into the news reports closely but that he was vehemently opposed to the weaponization of the Department of Justice and other such institutions.
He argues that trying to criminalize Trump’s lack of action that day was a completely different issue. He added that they did not want to be in a situation where one side constantly targeted the other and attempted to bring legal problems against them.
Trump revealed on Tuesday that he had been informed that he is a target of the investigation, looking into Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results following his loss. From the start, it has been clear that this investigation would target some of Trump’s actions; however, recently, Trump stated that he received a target letter which could indicate that he will be facing charges in this case soon.
He specifically said that special counsel Jack Smith who is handling the investigation sent him a letter on Sunday night telling him that he was a target and needed to report to the Grand Jury within four days.
