(TheRedWire.com) – Republican presidential candidate Ron DeSantis recently aligned himself with House Republicans advocating for the impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. In a message posted on a social media platform previously known as Twitter, DeSantis expressed his support for Mayorkas’ impeachment, criticizing his handling of immigration policies and accusing him of neglecting his official duties.

DeSantis’ statement emphasized that Mayorkas has failed in his responsibilities by allowing a substantial number of illegal immigrants into the United States. He pointed out that the lack of accountability in Washington is a key reason for poor governance outcomes.

The push for Mayorkas’ impeachment gained momentum last week with the House Republicans initiating a series of hearings. These proceedings, led by the Homeland Security Committee, scrutinized the impact of the Biden administration’s immigration policies on the country. Committee Chair Mark Green of Tennessee accused Mayorkas of being the principal cause of the current immigration issues, alleging a deliberate violation of his oath of office.

House Foreign Affairs Chair Michael McCaul of Texas suggested that Mayorkas’ impeachment could occur soon, citing abuses of power and dereliction of duty. McCaul specifically criticized Mayorkas for rescinding the ‘Remain in Mexico’ policy, a Trump-era directive that required asylum seekers to wait in Mexico for their U.S. court proceedings. According to McCaul, this decision has led to the release of illegal immigrants into American society, causing significant harm.

DeSantis, known for his strong stance on border security, has previously stated that, if elected president, he would deploy the military to the U.S.-Mexico border. He has proposed authorizing military personnel to use lethal force against drug cartels, emphasizing his commitment to a robust border security policy. This position reflects DeSantis’ focus on immigration as a key issue in his presidential campaign and aligns with the broader Republican narrative of strong border enforcement.
