(TheRedWire.com) – The United States is struggling to keep America’s borders safe amid a myriad of other crises under the so-called leadership of President Joe Biden and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. On Monday, September 13, Mayorkas’s chief of staff, Karen Olick, abruptly resigned. Mayorkas claimed his chief of staff told him in an email that she was leaving to pursue other opportunities.

In a separate communique, Olick seemed to complain Americans don’t appreciate what DHS does daily. She reminded DHS employees while Americans sleep, DHS doesn’t because it protects the country. Before working at DHS, Olick was a notable leader at the powerful Democratic strategic communications firm, SKDK.
Interestingly enough, Olick’s temporary replacement is Jennifer Higgins. She currently serves as the associate director at U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services in charge of Refugee, Asylum and International Operations. The career civil servant has over 20 years of government experience. DHS continues to struggle to manage the massive increase in illegal immigrants arriving at the southern border. While media headlines showcased the bungled Afghan withdrawal and Hurricane Ida, the Border Patrol encountered another record 200,000 illegal immigrants in August. That’s a 317% increase over August 2020.
Higgins will serve as Mayorka’s chief of staff pending the assignment of a permanent replacement.
