(TheRedWire.com) – A Washington grand jury indicted former President Donald Trump concerning his attempts to overturn the 2020 presidential election and his role in the Jan. 6 Capitol attack.
In the indictment, it is stated that despite his loss, Trump continued to perpetuate for months claims that he had won the presidential election, which was rigged and fraudulent. He is now facing four counts in this case, including conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to obstruct an official government proceeding, obstruction of an attempt to obstruct an official proceeding, and conspiracy against rights.
In the indictment, Trump’s six co-conspirators are mentioned but not named. These are the latest allegations against Trump, who is also the frontrunner in the 2024 presidential election. Trump has maintained that he has committed no wrongdoings in this case.
Despite this being his third indictment this year, Trump has not lost his Republican base, and according to the 2024 GOP primary polls, he continues to lead in the race.
During an appearance on Fox News, John Lauro, Trump’s lawyer, claimed that the indictments that the Department of Justice had filed against Trump were “weak” and driven by politics and violated the First Amendment rights of the former President.
The Justice Department’s Special Counsel Jack Smith also indicted Trump in an earlier case over his alleged mishandling of classified documents after the documents were found in Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate. Trump has pleaded not guilty to all charges in this case.
In April, Trump was also indicted in New York for falsifying business documents in connection to a hush payment made to adult film star Stormy Daniels. Trump pleaded not guilty to all charges.
