The head of the British multinational bank resigned effective immediately after investigators announced they were looking into Staley and his relationship with the disgraced financier. The Financial Conduct Authority and the Prudential Regulation Authority are looking into the relationship.
In December 2015, Staley became CEO of the international conglomerate. Before that, he worked as an executive at JP Morgan, where Epstein was a client. Earlier in 2015, before taking over at Barclays, Staley visited Epstein’s private island, where some of Epstein’s alleged criminal activities occurred.
It’s unknown why Staley is under investigation regarding Epstein. Staley and the company agreed to the resignation while he contested the investigation, according to the company.
Company officials added the investigation’s findings suggest that Staley didn’t know about Epstein’s alleged crimes. While Staley counters the investigation, the bank agreed to pay his salary and benefits for one year.
