(TheRedWire.com) – Ty Cobb, a former White House lawyer during Donald Trump’s presidency, criticized Florida federal Judge Aileen Cannon for her handling of the classified documents trial against Trump, expressing doubts that the trial will ever proceed.
In an interview with CNN, Cobb commented shortly after Judge Cannon oversaw hearings in Fort Pierce, Florida, where Trump’s legal team and his co-defendants sought dismissals of the charges. The trial was initially scheduled to start this past Monday.
Cobb expressed his skepticism about the trial moving forward, criticizing the judge’s approach to scheduling hearings incrementally. “Most federal judges would have already decided on all the pending motions,” Cobb told CNN. He argued that the trial should have commenced as scheduled, attributing the delay to what he perceives as Cannon’s incompetence and bias.
Cobb has previously voiced his disapproval of Cannon, describing her as “embarrassing” and “unhinged” due to her earlier rulings. He has also labeled her “incompetent” and suggested that she might be removed from the case. Earlier this month, he termed her decision to indefinitely postpone the trial as “tragic” and “inexplicable.”
During Wednesday’s hearings, the first since the indefinite postponement on May 7, motions to dismiss the case were presented by lawyers representing Trump, his valet Walt Nauta, and Mar-a-Lago property manager Carlos De Oliveira.
Last June, Trump pleaded not guilty to federal charges including unlawful retention of national defense information, conspiracy to obstruct justice, and making false statements.
Cobb also responded critically to Judge Cannon’s remarks in court, suggesting difficulties jurors might face in discerning differences in the counts due to the way prosecutors structured their indictment. “I think most jurors will have a triple-digit IQ,” Cobb remarked, questioning Cannon’s assessment and implying doubts about her judgment.
Cobb served as White House counsel under Trump for two years.
