(TheRedWire.com) – On Sunday, Sen. John Fetterman (D-Penn.) responded to the opening statement in Sen. Bob Menendez’s bribery trial which started last week, mocking the Senator for putting the blame on his wife.

During an appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Fetterman argued that he had been the first senator to call for the resignation of Menendez after his indictment last year. He also slammed the senator’s legal team for choosing to place the blame on his wife, Nadine Menendez, who according to recent reports is currently battling breast cancer.

Fetterman said to co-host Jake Tapper that he couldn’t imagine who would have convinced him that blaming his wife was a good idea, and added that he was unsure whether this was a strategy concocted by Menendez himself.

Menendez, his wife, and three businessmen are charged in a bribery scheme, where it’s alleged that they traded political influence for luxury gifts. The Menendez couple is having separate trials because of the Senator’s wife’s health condition.

Last week during the opening trial statements by the defense lawyers there was a general attempt to distance the actions of the Senator from those of his wife, At one point he even told jurors to consider how last week prosecutors had shown evidence relating to the involvement of Nadine Menendez but the senator did not appear in any of the evidence. The defense used this to argue that the couple was living completely separate lives.
