(TheRedWire.com) – United States Representative Ken Buck blasted House Speaker Kevin McCarthy over his recent suggestions about impeaching President Biden, arguing that these remarks were taking the attention away from the negotiations about the national budget.
Buck, who belongs to the House Freedom Caucus, argued during an interview on CNN that what McCarthy was effectively doing was saying that there was a “shiny object” that could draw all of their attention and that instead of focusing on the issues that they needed to resolve instead their attention would be placed on the object.
This week, McCarthy argued that the House investigation into President Biden and his family could have possibly “risen to the level of an impeachment inquiry.” Many conservative members of the Republican conference have also been calling for the impeachment of the President.
Buck noted that while he supported the Biden probe, he believed that current talks about impeachment only served as a distraction and were not sending the right message. He proceeded to say that it is not responsible for the GOP to be talking about impeachment because putting that message out there creates expectations from the public.
McCarthy is undergoing a lot of pressure from the Freedom Caucus to find ways to decrease spending, especially following the debt ceiling increase deal he had reached with President Joe Biden. While the deal caps discretionary spending for the next few years, it did not include sufficient spending cuts, according to most conservative Republicans.
