GOP Senator Introduces Bill to Reclaim Border

(TheRedWire.com) – Over the last several months, a crisis on the southern border emerged as nearly 100,000 migrants crossed over from Mexico into the US in February alone. Approximately 16,000 of them are unaccompanied minors. Despite the growing number of people coming from Central America, the Biden administration refused to call the situation a crisis and instead referred to it as a “challenge.” One US Senator says enough is enough. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) introduced the Secure and Protect Act of 2021. Much of the bill would restore Trump-era policies that brought the border under control over the last four years.

The bill would restore a Trump policy that requires Central Americans to apply for asylum in their home countries before making the trek to the United States. Graham noted that 80% of migrants pass what’s known as the credible fear standard. However, only 10% of the cases receive a decision to enter the country. As a result, Graham wants to lower the credible fear standard and appoint 500 new immigration judges to help with the caseloads.

The law has an almost zero likelihood of getting a hearing in committee or on the Senate floor since Democrats control both chambers of Congress.
