(TheRedWire.com) – On Monday, many Maui residents wrote angry messages on signs that they held up as President Biden’s motorcade was visiting Lahaina. The town was burned during the devastating wildfires that destroyed a large part of the island close to two weeks ago.
President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden visited the Hawaiian island, meeting with emergency officials, responders, and victims. According to officials, there are still 1,000 residents who appear to be unaccounted for, while the death toll on the island has reached 114 and is expected to continue going up as the search and recovery efforts continue.
However, the island residents were unhappy to see Biden’s motorcade approaching, with many holding up signs stating “Trump Won” and “F*** Biden.”
WCTV, a CBS News affiliate, also spoke with many residents protesting the President’s visit. Those residents had been waiting in the street across Kapalua Airport with signs that read “Actions speak louder than words” and “It’s too late.” Many claimed that the President needed to have arranged a visit to the island that would take place much earlier.
The president has been blasted from both sides over his response to the wildfires. However, on Sunday, the White House touted the federal administration’s efforts, pointing out that Biden had stated he would do everything possible to help with the recovery efforts on the island.
On Monday, during his remarks while on the island, Biden had told survivors that all of America was standing with them and that they would provide assistance for as long as was necessary to help rebuild the island in the way that the people of Maui want.
