(TheRedWire.com) – Tatiana Maslany, the title character in “She-Hulk,” described a new law requiring parents to share their child’s preferred pronouns as “overreach” and “absurd.”
Speaking to local reporters at the Canadian Walk of Fame, Maslany suggested that it shouldn’t be in “the control of the parents how a child identified,” adding that it wasn’t “a parent’s place” and that it is “an overreach” for the provincial government to legislate that, describing the law as “absurd.”
Maslany’s remarks are about a law in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan, which went into effect in October and requires school staff to receive permission from parents to use a child’s preferred name or identify them with their preferred gender identity.
The law, which only affects students under 16 years old, has sparked debate between supporters and opposition.
Maslany, who opposes the law as she believes children should be empowered to choose their identities, suggested parents “should be taking cues from [children], listening to them [and] empowering them to know who they are and name that.”
The “She-Hulk” star also addressed other social issues at the event, calling for the Canadian government to “demand a cease-fire” in the Israel-Hamas war and “stop funding a genocide.”
She concluded her speech by thanking attendees for inducting her into the Hall of Fame and being present before stating “Free Palestine.”
Maslany’s comments about preferred names and pronouns come as U.S. school districts also battle whether or not to use preferred pronouns and new names without parental consent.
Some school districts are clamping down on the practice, while others have allowed it to flourish.
Parents and advocates questioning the transgender movement are also voicing their concerns about conducting gender-reassignment procedures and treatments on minors.
