(TheRedWire.com) – Florida Governor and Republican presidential candidate Ron DeSantis argued on Saturday that with David Weiss appointed as special counsel, the federal probe into Hunter Biden would be a “total sham.”

DeSantis told reporters at the Iowa State Fair that the House had been attempting to hold Hunter Biden accountable but that with the introduction of a special counsel to this case, they were most likely trying to “checkmate that investigation.” He added that this is a “total sham,” and as he pointed out, Weiss has been the one to lead the investigations in Delaware into Hunter Biden.

As he pointed out so far, Weiss had handled Hunter Biden with “kid gloves,” and it was likely that his appointment as special counsel was only going to help impede the House of Representatives investigation. He further argued that they wanted to see results from the investigation, not further mileage.

Weiss first started investigating Hunter Biden in 2018; however, on Friday, Attorney General Merrick Garland announced that he would not be working as special counsel. Republicans had previously called for Garland to appoint a special counsel to this case. However, many slammed him for his decision to have Weiss take on that role.

U.S. Attorney for Delaware David Weiss has been heavily criticized recently over the “sweetheart” plea agreement he had reached with Hunter Biden concerning his tax evasion charges. The plea deal fell apart following a Delaware judge’s rejection of the agreement. Recent testimonies by IRS whistleblowers have also led to many questions about Weiss’ investigation.
