Joe Biden’s Lack of Understanding Abortion Is Drawing Outrage
(TheRedWire.com) – In late June, the US Supreme Court reversed Roe v. Wade with their decision in Dobbs v. Jackson’s Women’s Health Organization. The 6 to 3 majority ruled that the Warren Court got the issue of privacy wrong in its 1973 ruling, which led to a nationwide right to abortion. Justice Samuel Alito said the basis for the Roe decision was “egregiously wrong.” The opinion stated that the right of privacy from the past interpretation of personal liberty found in the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment was “remarkably loose” and caused deepened division in the country. As such, the Justices determined the Constitution did not grant a right to abortion and turned the matter over to the states to decide.
As a result, the issue of abortion has become a hot political issue. Democrats hope it will influence people to vote for them on Tuesday, November 8. Still, polls show the controversy is losing its influence among prospective voters. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) recently introduced legislation creating a nationwide ban on the procedure. In response, President Joe Biden made some questionable statements about the Catholic Church’s position on the subject.
Did Biden Demonstrate a Lack of Understanding About Abortion?
In early September, Graham introduced legislation banning abortion after 15 weeks. Recently, the president made two statements demonstrating he may not have a handle on the subject. First, he claimed the Republican lawmaker’s proposal didn’t make any exceptions for rape, incest, or the mother’s life.
Graham said that was untrue. On September 13, he told reporters the nation should outlaw abortion on demand after 15 weeks, except for rape, incest, or saving a mother’s life.
That leads to Biden’s second factually erroneous statement. During a DNC speech, the president, a Roman Catholic, doubled down on the assertion that Republicans make no exceptions and stated, “My church doesn’t even make that argument.” Yet, the Catholic Church makes no exceptions except when the mother’s life is at risk.
President of Catholic Vote, Brian Burch, told Newsmax the Commander in Chief continually claims his faith as a devout Catholic but shows he doesn’t understand Catholic teaching. Burch said the Church believes the unborn shouldn’t face punishment for a parent’s transgression. He stressed the Catholic belief at all life “is sacred and worthy of protection” from conception without regard to circumstances.
Recent Poll Shows Abortion Not a Leading Issue
On Sunday, September 25, an ABC News/Washington Post poll showed abortion wasn’t among voters’ top four issues heading into the election. The economy led the way at 89%, followed by education (77%), inflation (76%), and crime (69%). Abortion came in at 62%. On critical issues, voters said they trusted Republicans (52%) over Democrats (38%).
So, are Democrats making a mistake pushing the abortion narrative heading into the 2022 midterm elections? Do Biden’s misstatements hurt his integrity among voters?
Time will tell.
