(TheRedWire.com) – On Friday, federal Judge Aileen Cannon who is overseeing former President Donald Trump’s classified documents case agreed to the defendant’s request to have some of the deadlines pushed further so as to give prosecutors more time to consider the Supreme Court’s immunity ruling.
Trump’s lawyers had requested to be allowed to file more documents that would argue that the former President should be granted presidential immunity from prosecution in the case. This week in their motion Trump’s team had proposed a schedule that extended through early September. This is going to mean that a final ruling in this case will not occur until fall if not later.
On Saturday, the Trump-appointed judge stated that prosecutors are going to have until July 18 to respond to Trump’s request for a delay. She also postponed two other deadlines in the case, however, that is likely to cause only a minor delay.
Trump has pleaded not guilty in this case. His lawyers have now been arguing that the decision of the Supreme Court should grant the President protection from official acts and apply to the case. Trump is being accused of mishandling classified documents after he exited the White House and of attempting to block the government from retrieving them after he left office.
Trump’s team has also asked for the case to be halted, except for the gag order pending request. They also pointed out that in the Supreme Court’s opinion, Justice Clarence Thomas had questioned the motives of Special Counsel Jack Smith as well as his authority in bringing the case forward.
