(TheRedWire.com) – Progressives and immigration advocates are appalled that President Biden is considering enforcing border policies that would require migrant families to be held at detention facilities again. Stopping these sorts of policies had been a central campaign promise that Biden had made in 2020.
If this type of policy is reinstated then the Democrats will have a hard time during the 2024 election cycle when the treatment of migrants at the border is discussed. This is important as it could also blur the lines between the differences between the Biden and the Trump administrations.
Rep. Greg Casar (D-Texas), a newly-elected House progressive from the state’s 25th congressional district on Tuesday said that having families and children locked is “dangerous, ineffective, and wrong.” He argued that regardless of the political party doing it it is “wrong to incarcerate refugee children.”
Casar and other Democrats reacted to a report by The New York Times, which claimed that Biden was considering reinstating certain elements of Trump’s policy. Progressives and other groups have pointed out that Biden had previously promised that he would follow a different path to these problems. Casar continued to say that they should not be going “back.”
Setareh Ghandehari, an advocacy director at the pro-immigration coalition Detention Watch Network, told The Hill that the situation was “infuriating.”
Other critics are also worried that Biden might be retracting his previous promises.
