(TheRedWire.com) – In 2016, then-Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump struck a chord with tens of millions of American voters. He ran on an “America First” platform emphasizing job growth that Democrats compromised with illegal immigration and bad global trade deals. In 2020, Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden ran against these principles. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, many in the media speculated Trump would defeat Biden and cruise to re-election.

As president, Biden has reversed virtually every Trump policy. The result was chaos on the southern border, increased crime across America, potentially illegal but certainly polarizing COVID-19 vaccination mandates, employers struggling to find workers, and skyrocketing inflation. For his efforts, the president’s poll numbers are among some of the worst of other presidents in their first year in office. Democratic strategist Ruy Teixeira, who many claim is responsible for the modern-day Progressive movement, recently suggested Democrats need to focus on Trump’s issues and leave the radical equity agenda behind.
In 2002, Teixeira laid out the path for Progressive Democrats to use to radicalize the party. Now, he is asking Progressives to abandon his old strategy and embrace Trump’s populism or risk falling behind in future elections. It’s not a pill Progressives seem willing to swallow. Democrats loathe Trump. Teixeira acknowledges the transition would be painful but argues it’s necessary for the party’s long-term viability.
