(TheRedWire.com) – On Tuesday during a press conference, New York City Mayor Eric Adams stated that the migrants in the city had been reported as being involved in crimes and being part of a “robbery pattern.”
New York City over the last year has seen significant improvement in its fight against rising violent crimes, as they have increased the number of police officers that are present in the city’s streets. These efforts resulted in the murder rates being reduced by 12 percent in 2023 when compared to the previous year, while the number of shootings fell by one-quarter. These numbers were released by the New York City Police Department and showed that there was a decline in the number of shootings in all five boroughs.
The Wall Street Journal in a recent op-ed noted that Eric Adams, the New York City Mayor has been credited with the more aggressive policing introduced by the people, and is perceived to be responsible for the enhanced safety.
Adams 2022 Neighborhood Safety Teams program has in part been responsible for the increase in police presence. The program sought to replace plainclothes teams which had been disbanded in New York City following the 2020 protests after the death of George Floys. Those officers were instrumental in seizing large numbers of illegal firearms throughout the city in the last year.
Before approaching an individual, officers are required to have reasonable suspicion, this could include either an act of aggressive behavior they had witnessed or a tip from a neighbor.
