(TheRedWire.com) – On Wednesday, all U.S. Senators received a 30-minute briefing from the Secret Service, FBI, and the Department of Justice that focused on the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump during his recent rally in Pennsylvania.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) put through the request for an unclassified phone briefing relating to the shooting. He has already received one briefing regarding the incident which resulted in one person losing their life and two others who were seriously injured.
Following Senate Homeland Security Committee Chair Gary Peters (D-Mich.) announcement that he was starting a bipartisan investigation that will be focused on the shooting, Schumer announced the briefing.
On Monday, Peters had informed reporters that the senators in his committee were going to be receiving a full briefing from law enforcement officials. He also reported that on Sunday he had an extensive discussion with Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and that the following day he had received a briefing from the FBI.
Peters further noted that he was going to attempt expediting a public hearing relating to the incident so that it would take place before the end of the month. As he noted he is focused on launching the probe and determining exactly what had occurred to ensure that it would not happen again. He added that they needed to ensure that law enforcement and the Secret Service have the necessary resources in order to keep former presidents, the current president, and other elected officials protected.
