(TheRedWire.com) – It’s a difficult task to ask Democrats to do the right thing if it could harm their party. Far-left Squad member Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) appears to have a problem with Jewish people, Israel, and even America. Omar came to America as a Muslim refugee from Somalia. Since being elected to Congress, controversy has followed her continually.
On Monday, June 7, Omar posted offensive, anti-Semitic remarks on Twitter and equated the United States and Israel with Hamas and the Taliban. Her inflammatory post ignited an uproar in the Democratic Party. A group of 12 Jewish Democrats criticized Omar and said her statement reflected a “deep-seated prejudice.” Omar fired back, calling the group “shameful.” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and other members of the House Democratic leadership demanded she explain her remarks but didn’t call for an apology or acknowledgment that what she said was wrong. After Pelosi swept the incident under the rug, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) had enough.
In Omar’s short time in Congress, she has a long history of anti-Semitic statements. Her remarks forced Democrats to introduce a resolution in 2019 condemning anti-Semitism, racism, and Islamophobia. The last two were introduced in the resolution by Democrats to protect Omar because they refused to censor the controversial Congresswoman directly.
McCarthy Calls for Omar’s Removal from Prestigious Committee
Once again, Pelosi is protecting Omar. She doesn’t have much of a political choice because the Speaker needs to keep her fractured party together. It’s a classic example of party over country. It’s actions such as this that hurt the credibility of politicians and pit Americans against one another.
For his part, McCarthy appears to be out of patience with the hypocrisy. On Tuesday, June 15, McCarthy called on Pelosi to remove Omar from the powerful House Committee on Foreign Affairs. Conservatives questioned why Omar was selected for that committee in the first place, considering her level of hostility towards America. However, it’s unlikely that Pelosi will do anything.
McCarthy is considering whether or not to force a vote to strip Omar of her committee posts. However, a floor vote to remove her is likely to fail since Democrats currently hold a razor-thin majority in the chamber. Democrats appear intent to protect Omar despite their internal differences. On Fox News, McCarthy promised that if the GOP takes back the House in 2022, Omar will not be serving on the Foreign Affairs committee, and neither will anyone else who holds anti-Semitic, anti-American views.
McCarthy may get his chance as the GOP gains momentum to take back the House in 2022. Unfortunately, 18 months is a long time to wait in politics.
