(TheRedWire.com) – Senator Mitt Romney broke from other GOP members following a briefing on the suspected Chinese surveillance balloon that was given to Congress. After the briefing, Romney defended the U.S. actions saying that he thought the country made the right decision in not shooting the balloon down the first moment it was spotted.

When reporters directly asked him if he agreed with the administration’s decision to wait to shoot down the balloon, Romney simply replied “Yes.” He continued on by saying that he thought the “administration, the president, our military and intelligence agencies” all acted with skill and care and showed that they have “extraordinarily impressive” capabilities.

He added that while he does not think it was ever possible to do anything “100 percent correctly” following the briefing he was a lot more confident that things had been completed as well as possible.

The Biden administration had brought down the balloon on Saturday afternoon off the coast of the Carolinas after letting it travel across the U.S. for several days. China has maintained that the balloon was used for meteorological research and that it had accidentally drifted off its planned course.

The Chinese balloon had first been spotted flying over Billings, Montana, which is where one of the three domestic nuclear missile silo fields in America is located. Since its original spotting many had called for the balloon to be brought down. However, national security officials advised against that move as there were security concerns about bringing the large aircraft down over inhabited grounds.
