(TheRedWire.com) – On Sunday, the creator of the 90s NBC drama “West Wing,” Aaron Sorkin, suggested Democrats nominate Republican Mitt Romney.
In an op-ed for the New York Times, Sorkin suggested the Democratic Party nominating the GOP Senator Romney “would be putting our money where our mouth is.”
He suggested it would be “a clear and powerful demonstration” that the upcoming election isn’t about politics “but about stopping a deranged man from taking power,” a reference to former President Donald Trump.
Sorkin also noted that Democrats hadn’t been polling well against Trump.
Biden, who dropped out of the race on Sunday evening, had been facing mounting calls to withdraw his Presidential bid following his disastrous debate performance. Recent polling also showed that 65 percent of Democrat voters want Biden to withdraw.
In his op-ed, Sorkin noted that as “heroic” as Biden dropping out may be, the “real world” problem “is that there isn’t a Democrat… polling significantly better” than the President.
“Democrats nominating a Republican” might be the “healing event” America needs following the attempt on Trump’s life on July 13.
Sorkin also suggested former President Barack Obama could endorse his previous rival at the Democratic convention, and Romney “could make the case” Democrats are putting the U.S. before the party “in ways the MAGA movement will not,” adding that Romney could also make his “bipartisan cabinet picks at the convention.”
Sorkin noted that West Wing’s writing staff would have told him that this fantasy would “never, ever happen,” adding that “Democrats need to break the glass,” and his plan would do just that, claiming it would put “a lump in our throats.”
