(TheRedWire.com) – Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (New York) describes the United States healthcare as “barbarism” according to a preview of Independent Senator Bernie Sanders’ (Vermont) Podcast.
In the short clip previewing Wednesday’s episode of “Bernie: The Podcast,” which launched two months ago, Ocasio-Cortez laments the cost of housing and healthcare and the tough choice Americans are subject to by choosing between healthcare and rent.
The New York Democrat described the choice as barbarism, using the same term to describe the anxiety people face that they may end up on the street “every four weeks.”
Ocasio-Cortez lamented how unaffordable health care is, suggesting that people couldn’t determine whether an ache was a “sore joint or cancer… because they can’t afford the doctor,” declaring this “barbarism.”
She added that it wasn’t only necessary to demand but also “win” the fight for unions, healthcare, and wages rather than “condemn ourselves to barbarism,” claiming she was refusing to give up and “submit” herself to that sort of future and would rather “fight.”
Ocasio-Cortez and Sanders have emerged as mainstays in progressive politics, playing a critical role in passing the Inflation Reduction Act at the start of President Joe Biden’s term as President.
The Inflation Reduction Act was a host for several progressive policies which included capping insulin at $35 for those receiving Medicare in addition to giving Medicare the power to negotiate directly with drug companies.
Both public figures have been proponents of “Medicare for All” legislation, ramping up their discussion about the topic during this election season.
