(TheRedWire.com) – On Sunday, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) warned that the Supreme Court had been engaging in an “authoritarian expansion of power” following the recent controversial opinions and rulings handed down last week.
In an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Ocasio-Cortez pointed out that if the courts continue to act without any oversight over their power, then what will start occurring is the undemocratic and “dangerous authoritarian expansion of power” of the country’s highest court. She added that this is precisely what they are seeing with the court right now with the overturning of abortion rights, discrimination rulings, to rulings against the LGBTQ community in the United States. As she pointed out, these types of commands show a dangerous move towards “authoritarianism and centralization of power.”
Last week the Supreme Court decided on many essential landmark decisions, including one that would block affirmative action programs in college admissions, stop the Biden student loan relief program and affect LGBTQ rights. Many of these decisions have been celebrated by the Republicans, while the Democrats have widely slammed the Court.
Ocasio-Cortez, who regularly criticized the conservative Supreme Court, argued on Sunday that the justices are “expanding their role” and starting to act like they are the Congress. These comments have also been made regarding the recent Supreme Court controversies over the lack of ethical standards and the fact that there are no limitations to the power of the justices. This is what Ocasio-Cortez claimed they should focus on, particularly as these abuses of power relate to conflicting interests.
