(TheRedWire.com) – On Wednesday, Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez posted on Twitter to express support for the Green New Deal, pointing out how the environmental impact of climate change is felt in many places in the world. In her post, she stated that the wildfire in Canada has resulted in NYC being filled with wildfire smoke, and the rising temperatures in Puerto Rico prove that the world was unprepared for the “climate crisis.”
As she pointed out, they needed to change the food system, infrastructure, energy grid, and other areas to prepare both for the current situation and the one coming up.
Reuters has reported 413 active wildfires across Canada, 249 of which are still out of control. As of Sunday, the burned area in Canada spanned 8.15 million acres, around 13 times more than the decade average. The smoke has also led to air quality issues across the East Coast states.
On Tuesday night, at 10 p.m. ET, NYC Mayor Adams announced that parts of the city have “Very Unhealthy” air quality, which could cause health concerns, according to the reports of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
In April, Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Ed Markey, D-Massachusetts, reintroduced the Green New Deal, which would help completely transform the American workforce, and infrastructure and help prepare the country for the climate crisis. In an interview in April, Ocasio-Cortez stated that the cost of not addressing the situation was too much.
