(TheRedWire.com) – Each branch of the United States’ armed services uses a term to identify its members like Army soldiers, Air Force airmen, and Marines. And now the United States Space Force can join their ranks.
The newest branch was officially established on December 20, 2019, and those who served in it were simply known as “space professionals.” Vice President Mike Pence announced on December 18, 2020; they will now be known as the Guardians.
Today, after a yearlong process that produced hundreds of submissions and research involving space professionals and members of the general public, we can finally share with you the name by which we will be known: Guardians. pic.twitter.com/Tmlff4LKW6

Given the sci-fi culture the last few generations have grown up with, the jokes and mocking were inevitable. With the newest announcement, the director of the Guardians of the Galaxy movie franchise pondered whether they could sue for copyright infringement. But being protected against potential attacks from spaceborne weapons is no joking matter, seeing as there are reports that both Russia and China now can attack our country from orbit.
