Popeye Is Now Going Woke

Beloved TV Show Is Getting a “WOKE” New Makeover

(TheRedWire.com) – Over the last several months, Disney officials said they intended to use their entertainment platform to promote the LGBTQ+ agenda through diversity and inclusion. Apparently, Disney characters aren’t the only ones getting a “woke” makeover. For generations, people asked if Popeye was blind in one eye? What was his real name? Did he and Olive Oyl ever get married? At 93 years old, those may not be the questions a modern audience is asking.

Cartoonist Randal K. Milholland told the San Antonio Express-News that old cartoon episodes and comic strips of Popeye dressing in drag proved that the man who ate spinach to acquire super strength was always gender fluid. Of course, it’s unlikely that followers of the beloved character thought of Popeye that way back in the day.

Nonetheless, Milholland said he didn’t want to live in a purely straight white environment, and many may not want Popeye to live that way either. So, how is Popeye’s life changing in the new comic strips? In addition to his gender-fluid orientation, Olive Oyl’s sister-in-law Cylinda is no longer white. She’s an Afro-Latina.

Popeye first appeared in 1929 in the Thimble Theatre comic strip. King Features Syndicate, a subsidiary of Hearst Communications, still owns the rights to the iconic figure.

So, should every comic be revised to incorporate LGBTQ+ themes, or should some iconic characters like Popeye remain fun without a political agenda?
