Kabaeva is a highly celebrated and decorated gymnast. She earned 2 Olympic medals, 14 World Gymnast medals, and 21 European championships. The media hailed her as Russia’s most flexible woman at one time. Kabaeva eventually became a pro-Kremlin member of parliament, where she served for eight years. In 2014, the Kremlin appointed her to run the state-owned National Media Group, where the government handsomely paid her $10 million per year.
Despite Kabaeva’s high government profile, the public rarely sees her.
