(TheRedWire.com) – For nearly a year, the partisan January 6 House Select Committee has attempted to make the case that former President Donald Trump was responsible for the January 2021 riot on Capitol Hill. The committee is comprised of seven Democrats and two anti-Trump Republicans. Over the last several months, they issued subpoenas for former White House adviser Steve Bannon and White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows to appear before the committee. Both refused, and the Department of Justice filed charges against Bannon.
Now, it seems the committee is wading into unchartered territory. Recent actions by committee members forced the Republican National Committee (RNC) to file a lawsuit to stop the committee from acquiring private data having nothing to do with January 6. The legal action is against the committee and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA).
The question is, why are Democrats prying into the RNC?
RNC Sues to Protect Internal and Private Data
On Wednesday, March 9, the RNC filed a lawsuit to stop the January 6 House committee from obtaining the RNC’s internal databases. The GOP argues the information it collects has nothing to do with January 6. RNC Chief Counsel Justin Riemer said the committee subpoenaed Salesforce.com to compel it to provide data it stores for the RNC. Reimer said the data enables the GOP and partner nonprofits to communicate with millions of online supporters.
The RNC attorney added Democrats seek information on private donor data and other information the political party uses to create and implement political strategies. If released, the data would expose the RNC’s political strategies to Democrats as well as private information about donors.
So, is the committee really trying to get information about January 6, or are committee members using their investigative powers to spy on and steal political data to help Democrats win elections?
RNC Makes Bold Accusation
The Select Committee responded to the lawsuit by arguing that the RNC’s email messaging influenced Trump supporters to attack the Capitol building to stop the certification of the Electoral College and overturn the 2020 election. The Democratic committee alleges Trump and the RNC solicited donations using supposedly false claims through fraud.
Republicans counter that something more sinister is at play. Reimer said Pelosi and the committee were weaponizing Congress’ investigative powers. In doing so, they are attempting to evade the First Amendment rights of the RNC, its donors, and millions of Americans.
So, what do you think?
Are the Democrats up to something nefarious or is the subpoena for political records legitimate?
