(TheRedWire.com) – On Thursday, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) claimed that he was disappointed at Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) for having attended a meeting on that same day with former President Donald Trump.

Schumer had been asked in an interview whether he found it surprising that Trump and McConnell were shaking hands during their meeting. The two Republican leaders have reportedly not been in contact since their 2020 fallout after the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol attack.

Schumer stated that there are many Republicans, including McConnell who in their hearts and minds understand that Trump poses a threat to democracy and how disastrous he is as the U.S. president. He continued by saying that McConnell needed to have the courage to show up, especially as deep inside he knew what Trump was going to do and what he was like.

This is the first time that the former President returned to Capitol Hill since the Capitol attack. During his visit, he had a meeting with House Republicans and a lunch with Senate Republicans.

McConnell, who has in the past expressed criticism towards Trump, stated that the two of them had a positive meeting whereas he argued there was no negative point that he could make.

Trump previously had opposed the attempts of former President Donald Trump to block President Joe Biden’s victory certification on the day that Trump’s supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol. In the past few years, Trump has taken to calling McConnel “old crow.”
