Rising Tensions in the West Bank
The recent attack on Nur Shams camp is part of a broader pattern of escalating violence in the West Bank since the outbreak of the war in Gaza. The conflict was triggered by Hamas’s attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, which resulted in approximately 1,200 Israeli deaths and the abduction of about 250 people.

Since October 7, 128 Palestinians, including 26 children, have been killed in Israeli air strikes in the West Bank. In total, 607 Palestinians have died in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, with 11 killed by Israeli settlers. The situation has been further complicated by increased settler violence, with one Palestinian killed and three others wounded in a recent attack by Jewish settlers.

Humanitarian Impact
The ongoing violence has had a devastating impact on civilians in both the West Bank and Gaza. In Gaza, Israeli airstrikes have killed at least 18 people, including eight children, according to Palestinian officials. The Gaza Health Ministry reports that over 40,000 people have been killed in Gaza due to Israel’s offensive since October 7.

The humanitarian situation in Gaza has deteriorated significantly, with evacuation orders displacing several hundred thousand Palestinians and shutting down U.N. humanitarian operations. The blockade has severely limited the delivery of essential supplies, with only about 100 trucks entering Gaza daily, far short of the needed 500 trucks. Additionally, health concerns are mounting, with polio reemerging in Gaza, prompting a planned U.N. vaccination campaign.
International Response
The international community has expressed grave concern over the escalating violence in the region. Calls for restraint and dialogue have been issued by various international actors. Gen. CQ Brown, U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman, recently met with Israeli defense leaders to discuss de-escalation strategies.
“Israeli authorities must take measures to protect all communities from harm, this includes intervening to stop such violence, and holding all perpetrators of such violence to account” a National Security Council spokesperson said.
Despite these efforts, a recent round of high-level talks concluded without a ceasefire agreement, although negotiations are ongoing. The situation remains tense, with both sides facing pressure to find a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
