(TheRedWire.com) – Steve Bannon, the former Trump administration chief strategist, criticized former President Donald Trump’s recent idea to give green cards to all the international students that graduate from U.S. colleges.

While Bannon is a strong ally of the former President, he argued on Friday that he did not agree with this immigration idea. He also stated that the student’s exit visa needed to be clipped with their diploma.

In his comments, Bannon argued that the majority of people coming to study in the United States wanted to return to their home countries, where their families and communities are. He continued by stating that those people should be allowed to come and train in the United States and acclimate to the university culture, but once that ends it is time for them to return to their home countries.

Bannon also claimed that those students should return to their own home countries and make them “great again” after they graduate from a U.S. university. He added that this was the way to move forward as nations of this earth.

During an appearance on the “All-In” podcast on Thursday, Trump argued that college graduates needed to be automatically given a green card that would allow them to stay in the United States. This is a great change in Trump’s stance towards migration when considering that during his first administration, he had campaigned on the grounds that he would build a wall along the U.S. Southern border.

In 2016 former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton used a similar idea stating that certain STEM and PhD graduates should be allowed to receive green cards.
