Texas to See if Child Gender Change Counts as “Child Abuse”

Texas to See if Child Gender Change Counts as

(TheRedWire.com) – Texas is a state that isn’t afraid to take a stand for something its people believe in, even if it’s controversial. A new move by Gov. Greg Abbott (R) is very likely to stir the pot with LGBTQ+ advocates.

In a letter dated February 22, the governor instructed the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) to investigate sex-change procedures on minors. He contends current Texas law designates such actions as child abuse.

Additionally, he instructed DFPS to look into doctors, nurses, teachers, and other providers who are mandatory reporters of sex-change procedures for potential criminal charges. Abbott maintained the DFPS has an obligation under the law to investigate the child’s parents and the facilities performing gender-transitioning procedures.

The governor referred to the law and an opinion by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton on the matter. The AG issued his statement after reading a report by DFPS Commissioner Jaime Masters categorizing genital mutilation during reassignment surgery as child abuse due to the inability of the child to consent to the procedure.

The application of the law and the designation of child abuse would not apply in situations where doctors perform surgeries to repair damage from an injury or correct congenital disabilities or disorders.
