The Trial Begins of a Man Charged With Murder in Texas

(TheRedWire.com) – A trial got underway on Monday, November 15, involving a 48-year-old man accused of heinous acts against 18 senior women. Prosecutors say the case is about stalking, smothering, and stealing from the most vulnerable among us. The authorities charged Billy Kipkorir Chemirmir, a Kenyan immigrant, with murdering 81-year-old Lu Thi Harris, but a long winding road led them to their suspect.

For several years, law enforcement investigated hundreds of suspicious deaths among older adults. They believed a serial killer was stalking seniors. Police arrested Chemirmir in March 2018 after he allegedly attacked 91-year-old Mary Bartel at a senior living facility in Plano, Texas. She died two years later, but not before recording a deposition.

After Bartel’s attack, police followed clues leading them to the suspect’s apartment, where they discovered jewelry and cash. Additionally, investigators found a jewelry box, leading them to Harris’ home, where they found her body. Investigators learned Chemirmir and Harris purchased items at the same time at a Walmart on the day she died. In addition, store surveillance video showed him visiting the same Walmart at the same time as 87-year-old Mary Brooks before she passed away under suspicious circumstances. Cameras caught his vehicle parked next to the victim’s car in the parking lot. Authorities eventually charged Chemirmir with homicide in Brooks’ death, also.

In Harris’ case, Chemirmir could face life in prison without the possibility of parole. He pleaded not guilty to the crime. Chemirmir could face multiple trials including one for Brooks’ murder.
