Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez and Wife Under Federal Investigation
(TheRedWire.com) – Senator Bob Menendez (D-NJ) defeated public-corruption charges when a jury deadlocked over the matter in 2017. Now, the Department of Justice is apparently investigating Menendez and his wife on unrelated issues.
In the case against Menendez, prosecutors may be trying to discern whether the senator offered political favors related to the previous charges. The Wall Street Journal recently reported on another alleged investigation involving Menendez’s wife, Nadine Arslanian, that centers on whether she received gifts from people seeking favors from her husband.
There are few details about the current investigation into Menendez, who also serves as a Senate Foreign Relations Committee chairman. Writers at POLITICO have suggested that the current case may be similar in nature to charges originally filed against him in 2015. At the time, prosecutors accused Menendez of offering political favors to Florida eye doctor Salomon Melgen.

At the time, Menendez stood accused of interceding in a Centers for Medicare and Medicare Services investigation into Dr. Melgen. There were also allegations that the Senator tried to help Melgen’s business benefit in exchange for political donations, private flights, and expensive vacations at the eye doctor’s villa in the Dominican Republic.
According to the WSJ, the Justice Department has also issued subpoenas to Nadine Arslanian’s associates in relation to a case dating back to 2019. Investigators reportedly received search warrants for one of her contacts who had exported halal meat to Egypt via his business. Investigators may also be looking into whether the couple engaged in undisclosed foreign lobbying and other federal law violations.
