(TheRedWire.com) – California Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell has been mocked online by conservatives after posting a video on X, formerly known as Twitter, calling for an “assault weapons” ban after the mass shooting in Jacksonville, Florida.
In the video, Swalwell added that it was impossible to continue living like this and that it was necessary to ban assault weapons. She then claimed that they needed to “buy them all back” and ensure that dangerous weapons would no longer fall into the hands of dangerous people. Instead, she claims the focus should be on protecting the children from killers and that, in this case, you chose the children.
Swalwell’s response to the shootings in UNC-Chapel Hill and Jacksonville and the push for more gun control measures led to many conservatives online attacking her.
Ryan Petty, whose daughter Alaina, 14, had been one of the victims of the 2018 Parkland shooting, wrote “Go home, commie,” in his response to Swalwell.
In the past few months, many Democrats, including President Biden, have been pushing for a ban on “assault weapons.” Biden, specifically following the Michigan mass shooting, had stated that they needed to ban high-capacity magazines and assault weapons “come hell or high water.” During his time serving as a Delaware Senator, Biden had voted for the ban on semi-automatic firearms in 1994. The bill was included in an anti-crime package, and to pass through Congress, it had a sunset provision, which meant that the ban only lasted for ten years.
