(TheRedWire.com) – On Friday, March 12, former President Donald Trump surprised attendees of a fundraising event at his home in Mar-a-Lago. Big Dog Ranch Rescue held an event at Trump’s resort home hosted by his daughter-in-law, Lara Trump. The organization was raising money to rescue 500 dogs from China. The communist country treats dogs as livestock and is a big part of the meat industry. The non-profit attempts to save 5,000 dogs per year.

In his short, impromptu speech, the president said he wasn’t planning on saying anything until he walked by and heard the event. As the applause settled, Trump added that he was with the organization’s efforts 100% and that while in the White House, they discussed helping dogs numerous times in meetings. He also announced that his daughter-in-law might be running for Senate in North Carolina to replace retiring Sen. Richard Burr (R-NC).
President Trump was the first president not to own a dog since President Chester Arthur was in the White House from 1881 to 1885.
