(TheRedWire.com) – Former President Donald Trump could soon get an important immigration policy win, as the White House is thinking about bringing back a policy from his administration to reduce the pressure on the U.S.-Mexico border and unlock funding for Ukraine.
During the Biden administration, the number of suspected illegal migrants who have been caught at the border while attempting to cross illegally has reached a record high. It was reported that in the 2023 fiscal year, the figure had reached 2.4 million illegal crossings.
A leading political scientist recently told Newsweek that the inadequate policies pushed by the Biden administration had meant that President Biden was more “vulnerable” to the immigration rhetoric being pushed by Trump. Trump, the frontrunner of the Republican primary race, is widely expected to face President Joe Biden in the 2024 presidential election.
An increase in the border restrictions could be particularly upsetting to the Democratic, progressive base as many are already against Biden’s decision to provide such strong support for Israel, as the country has launched a military offensive into Gaza.
The administration is also attempting to get additional financial support for both Israel and Ukraine. However, the only way to receive the necessary approval from the House GOP is through concessions on immigration.
Earlier this week, Politico noted that Biden was considering introducing a new version of Title 42, originally introduced as a pandemic measure by the Trump administration in 2020. The order was lifted in 2023. Title 42 allowed the U.S. to go through the expulsion process for migrants who had entered the U.S. without having to go through the asylum process, using the presence of an infectious disease as an excuse.
